What is the meaning of Gilead in The Handmaid's Tale?

Gilead is also the name of a town in Maine which is in the general area Handmaid's is set. This town was named because of the tree the balm comes from grew there. It is heavily implied in the series that Gilead began as a bible study group where people with problems were invited to.
